Advice from a Beauty Professional During COVID-19: Sunscreen

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, so let’s talk about the importance of sunscreen!

Did you know?

  • 1 in 5 people will be diagnosed with a form of skin cancer at some point in their life.

  • It only takes 10 minutes for sun damage to occur, even on a cloudy day.

  • Sun damage can take up to 10 years to present itself on your skin. People who wear SPF everyday show 24% less skin aging than those who don’t.

  • Wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen to protect from both UVA and UVB can be the difference between premature aging, wrinkles, and even life-threatening skin cancer.

There are 3 types of UV rays:

  • UVA: The Aging Ray

  • UVB: The Burning Ray

  • UVC: Is blocked by the atmosphere

There are two types of sunscreen: Physical and Chemical

Physical sunscreens are more likely give to your skin a white cast but are typically better for more sensitive skin types. Chemical sunscreens usually have a more refined texture and work better under makeup.

What factor of SPF should you be using?

Whatever SPF you choose, it is imperative that you use the correct amount and reapply as directed.

Wearing an SPF daily is hands down the best thing you can do for your skin. Finding one that agrees with your skin type and your texture preferences can take some trial and error, but it is well worth that effort! There are great options right at the drugstore (LaRoche Posay has so many to choose from!), as well as online options (Krave Beauty’s The Beet Shield being my personal favorite). I highly recommend watching Lab Muffin Beauty Science on YouTube for more information regarding specific SPF ingredients and more product recommendations.  She is a cosmetic chemist and has a wealth of knowledge in all things skincare.
