It’s time again for our new favorite monthly feature where we get to talk about you, our clients! This month we’re excited to highlight one of Ashley Marie’s nail client’s, Alyssa! She’s a talented, dedicated, local make-up artist who also preforms lash extensions and permanent make-up at Doll Eyes on Monona Drive. We’re also thrilled to announce that Alyssa will be joining the Midwest Beauty House team as a make-up artist for our wedding biz during the 2018 season. (Look for more wedding announcements coming soon!)

Meet Alyssa:

How long have you been a client of MBH?

“Ashley and I have been friends for years. I literally bug her to get my nails done every two weeks like clockwork. I’ve been coming to her for a year now—I’m so in love with her tiny works of art!”

What’s your favorite thing about MBH?

“Every time I go into MBH I feel like I’m hanging out at home chatting with friends. By the end of my appointment I’m like, “do I really have to leave?””

What do you love most about your nails?

“I love letting Ashley do whatever she wants. I never get the same thing twice. She pushes me out of my comfort zone and gets me to try new colors and designs that I normally wouldn’t even consider. Then, of course, I end up loving them. Bonus: she got me to stop biting my nails!”

Who’s your current style icon/inspiration?

“I take style (and life) inspiration from a lot of different places. From Micheline Pitt (illustrator/artist turned fashion designer) to Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill, the Julie Ruin). I’m also inspired by the local drag queens in Madison…strong, talented and beautiful women who are unapologetic about who they are and don’t put up with nonsense.”

What is your favorite or most used beauty product?

“There are so many great products in hair, skin and makeup, but my favorite are liquid lipsticks. Melt Cosmetics and Urban Decay make the best formulas—it’s the easiest way to look put-together without a ton of effort. I swipe on a red or dark purple and I feel amazing.”

What do you love most about Madison/the Midwest?

“I believe the people make the place. There are so many creative, intelligent, unique and loving people here that it makes it really easy to love Madison (and the Midwest in general).”

What are some of your favorite local business?

“I have a lot… Doll Eyes Lashes (where I do my thing, come say hi!). I’m a frequent flyer at the Jade Monkey in Monona and Steve’s Tattoo and Piercing on Willy Street. My daughter and I love going to Revel to make different crafts. I also love going to shops like Hatch Art House (Willy St), Anthology (State St), and Booth 121(Monona). You can find such cool stuff at those shops that are made by local artists.”

Why is receiving beauty services important to you?

“I’ve been through a lot of changes in the past year and one of my biggest takeaways was how important self-care is. I always tell my clients that it’s okay to put yourself first. Getting my nails or hair done is how I practice what I preach and prioritize myself.”

What does “better beauty culture” mean to you?

“It means supporting each other. People are so hard on themselves and if I can make someone see the version of themselves that either they want to see or that the people who know and love them the most can see, then I’ve done my part. It’s also about having a sense of kinship among other beauty industry professionals. I love working with people who share my passion, and celebrating their work and success.”
